It’s the world’s leading superyacht show, a stunning showcase of 120 yachts for sale, including 40 world premieres – not to mention the 500+ onshore exhibitors, ranging from brokers to shipyards to toys and luxury lifestyle products. No wonder the Monaco Yacht Show (MYS) attracts visitors from around the world, including potential yacht owners and key industry figures. But what if you’re one of the many participating Monaco Yacht Show crew at this year’s event, which runs from September 26th – 29th? Or you work on yachts and are interested in visiting this premier event?
Away from the yacht viewings and negotiations, the MYS offers some interesting opportunities for not only fun but career development. You’ll be able to network, meet with experts in superyacht recruitment, and partake in forums about the industry you work in. Here’s how to make the most of them.
C&C Lounge: The Official Monaco Yacht Show Crew Area
If you are crew working on a yacht on display at the MYS, you’ll be preparing for one of your busiest few days of the year as you welcome on board a stream of brokers, potential buyers and media while keeping the yacht in an impeccable state. Thankfully show organisers recognise how hard the crew work over the course of the event and, for five years now, have dedicated a space solely for yacht crew to escape and unwind.
The Captains & Crew Lounge (C&C Lounge) on Quai Louis II is a place where all crew (whether or not your yacht is in the show) can stretch your legs, with free WiFi and complimentary refreshments all day long. Some of the activities you can participate in include e-bike test rides, wine tastings, a beauty treatment or massage (on request), and evening aperitifs. It’s a great chance to network with fellow crew.
The C&C Lounge is open from 8.30am to 7 pm over the four days of the show. We suggest you register your attendance in advance. There are times, however, when this Monaco Yacht Show crew lounge is dedicated solely to captains and crew on MYS yachts: between 8.30am and 10 am for breakfast, and 12 pm and 2.30pm for lunch.*
Chances are, as yacht crew, you’ve come across ACREW and been to at least one of its activities. Its roadshow of workshops, discussion groups, and social events travel to shipyards, yacht shows and marinas as they help crew progress in their yachting careers.
As with previous MYS editions, ACREW returns this year with its Monaco Yacht Show crew lounge at La Rascasse, which will be open from 9.30am – 5 pm on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of the show. Another space dedicated to crew relaxation and networking, it’s also a spot where you can pick up a grab-and-go lunch if you’re on the run.
ACREW has also organised a series of seminars for captains and crew in conjunction with leading industry players. Topics include a women-only session on “Women in Leadership” at 2 pm on Wednesday, September 26th, a spotlight on “the revival of the Caribbean for season 2018/19” at 2 pm on Thursday, September 27th, and a panel on “green superyacht technology from an owner perspective” at 10.30 am on Friday, September 28th.
The SXM crew party, on Wednesday evening, is a great way to kick off the show!
PYA Sea Changes Seminar
If you are a PYA member, then you’ll have free admission to the PYA Sea Changes seminar on Thursday, September 27th from 4.30pm to 10.30pm. Held at the International Hydrographic Organization on Quai Antoine 1er, you can pop in and out of a series of discussions including updates from the PYA, MCA and RYA and a talk on the very topical and important subject of sexual harassment in yachting.
Meet with leaders in superyacht recruitment
Hopefully, we’ve proved that the Monaco Yacht Show isn’t just about yacht sales and isn’t only for yacht brokers – it’s a wonderful opportunity for crew to get more involved in their industry and keep abreast of the latest news! Key figures in superyacht recruitment, such as the team from YPI CREW, will be at the show, so it’s a great chance to reach out and start planning your career progression. Keep an eye on YPI CREW’s social media networks (Facebook, Instagram, G+ and Twitter) for updates, but engineers can meet with recruiters Jacqui, Marjorie, and Anna on Wednesday, September 26th, interior crew with Helen and Louise on Thursday 27th, and deck crew with Ulrica and Fiona on Friday 28th.
Here’s to a great Monaco Yacht Show crew event!
