Imperial Yachts interviewed Kirsten Schoombie, deckhand and dive instructor aboard, to tell us more about her passion, her experience and why diving with ASTRA is a true, unique experience to live this summer. Her motivation: teach her passion for seas and explore the wonderful and colorful underwater sceneries of the world.
Imperial: Where did you find your passion for diving from?
Kirsten Schoombie: I have been diving for over four years, having first taken the plunge during a holiday in Thailand. It is something I have grown hugely passionate about since, leading me to complete my training as a PADI Scuba Instructor.
IY: Are you able to train guests on board M/Y Astra who have never dived before?
KS: I am. This is one of my favourite parts of diving, being able to share this amazing experience with other people for the first time. It opens up a whole new world to them, and I feel very privileged to be a part of this introduction. We begin by completing a shallow ‘Try Drive’ to get used to the equipment and sensation of breathing underwater, and then progress as much or as little as the guest desires.
IY: What equipment do you have on board?
KS: We have a complete range of state-of-the-art diving equipment on board ASTRA, everything you need to comfortably and professionally explore the Oceans. This summer, we are ready to explore the beauties of all East Mediterranean coasts!
IY: Where has been your favourite place to dive?
KS: I love everything about the colours you see when diving in Tropical waters. It is hard to choose a particular place as every dive site has something different to offer, but the Galapagos and South East Asia are incredible. In the Mediterranean, Corsica has some exceptional dive sites, but the clear, blue waters of the Med are stunning throughout.
IY: What is the most interesting thing you have seen while diving?
KS: Diving with Whale Sharks in Thailand was definitely a highlight, but I also love looking at tiny things such as Nudibranches and Seahorses. The Hammerhead Sharks and Mobula Rays in the Galapagos were also incredible, and really get the heart racing!
IY: Why is diving a good charter activity?
KS: Anyone can dive, with the right instruction and equipment, both of which we can provide on board M/Y Astra. There is so much more to chartering a yacht if you are able to explore what’s going on beneath it! It really is a special and eye-opening experience to see the beauty of this under-water world. It gives you a greater appreciation of Ocean live and why we should all be conscious of our impact on it. There is so much to explore, and it is the perfect activity for a hot summer day.
